New Year, New You! Let’s be honest; there’s nothing special about January 1st; it’s just another day on the calendar. But it can be an easy mental starting point for new healthy habits. At Magnolia Dermatology, we are dedicated to helping our patients achieve healthier skin. Healthier skin starts with healthy skincare habits. Drs. Carla Gustovich and Rachel Quinby-Graves have outlined their Top 5 Skincare tips for 2023 to help you start on the right path this year.
1. Wear sunscreen daily!
Even in the cold of the winter, UV rays don’t take a break. UV exposure can cause premature aging, leathery skin, wrinkles, and brown spots. In addition, most skin cancers result from exposure to UV rays in sunlight. As Dr. Quinby-Graves says, “If you can see your hand in front of your face when you are outside, you are getting UV exposure.” So start wearing sunscreen daily to keep your skin healthy and beautiful!
2. Eat a healthy diet.
A healthy diet can bring many health benefits, including how your skin looks and feels. In a previous blog, “7 Common Questions About Acne,” Dr. Carla Gustovich shares: “There is some evidence that a diet high in sugar and dairy can lead to pimples. So, as in all things, consume in moderation, especially if you are experiencing blackheads, whiteheads, or other medical symptoms linked to sugar or dairy in your diet.”
3. Be kind to your skin – cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize
Use the skincare routine that is right for you. Do you know what your skin likes? Do you have sensitive skin? Do you have dry skin? Do you have naturally oily skin? Each of us has different types of skin which react to and like different skin care products. Get to know your healthy skincare needs or talk to a dermatologist to discuss the right products and care for your skin.
4. Manage your stress and get enough rest
Over the last few years, the world has experienced more stress than before. With more people experiencing stress and anxiety, there are now more tools to help relieve or cope with stress. Using these tools can help you feel better and look better!
Stress and rest can affect your skin health; make sure you are conscious of your stress and rest levels. One easy tool to track this could be the smartwatch on your wrist! Many smartwatches can help you track your sleep and stress levels.
5. Don’t smoke!
Smoking is linked to a multitude of health conditions and diseases. Smoking also makes you look older, causes wrinkles, and increases your risk of skin cancer! So, if you are looking for a sign to quit smoking, here it is. New year, new you, stop smoking!
